One of the best symbols of Bernini’s masterpiece is certainly The Fountain of the Four Rivers, a breathtaking fountain, right in the middle of Piazza Navona.

Designed in 1651 by Bernini for Pope Innocent X, the fountain consists of four main figures, around an obelisk.

They represent the four major rivers in the world: the Danube representing Europe, the Plate representing the Americas, the Nile representing Africa and the Ganges representing Asia.

Most Bernini’s fountains have animals and plants, each carrying metaphors or allegories. In this fountain you can admire four impressive animal figures: a horse, a lion, a snake and an armadillo. A pigeon, at the top of the central obelisk, symbolizes peace.

At Bernini’s time, the people of Rome strongly opposed the making of this fountain because it was built at public expense, in a period of famine.

A famous legend is related to this fountain: it is said that Bernini positioned the Plate sculpture as if it feared the front of the church of Sant’Agnese (by his rival Borromini) could crumble against him. In reality it was Bernini’s fountain to be completed first.

Walking along Via dei Fori Imperiali in Rome, you can not run in the elegant and majestic Trajan’s Column. This column of white marble was inaugurated by Trajan in 113 AD to celebrate the emperor’s two campaigns conducted in Dacia, the current Romania. Trajan’s Column starts from the base and pedestal of the column and reaches a height of 40 meters. Along the column are carved in bas-relief scenes of Roman military campaigns, which take place in a spiral towards the top of the column, which is now a statue of St. Peter.

The scenes are in chronological order and begin with the Romans who are preparing to end the war with the Dacians forced to abandon their land. Trajan’s Column is hidden inside a spiral staircase, closed to the public. Still inside the column in a golden urn at the base, were the ashes of Trajan and his wife Plotina. An ancient legend says that when the ashes were exhumed, the emperor told of how his soul had been saved from hell. For this reason the statue of Trajan on top of the column was maintained until 1587 when it was finally replaced by that of St. Peter.

The history of the thirteenth district of Trastevere , traces its roots back in the seventh century BC, when it was a land in the hands of the Etruscans “beyond the river,” this is the literal translation from the Latin Tiberim Trans.

The fact is that with time and the succession of emperors, Augustus, Aurelian, also was included in the Trastevere area of Rome, yet always remaining a marginal neighborhood, indeed, the last, the XIV. During the medieval time, Trastevere came to distinguish itself from that aspect of the village, consisting of Roman palaces and villas with very narrow lanes. The inhabitants of the district were called Trasteverini and formed a separate population, because of coming from the river. Many families chose to live in Trastevere and then out from the Urbe, greater peace of mind to breathe and live among the people they called genuine, tough and fair with women deemed beautiful.

With the passage of time Trastevere was characterized as one of the main and most characteristic districts of the city that you will certainly find mention in any guide to Rome.

When in Rome you’ll be astounded by the large cultural heritage you can find, from the Ancient Rome ruins to art galleries and museums. The one and only problem in Rome is that almost everywhere you have to pay a fee entrance, so finding a free museum with interesting paintings and sculptures is almost impossible.   We said almost, this means that if you know the right address you can find some Canovas, some Raffaellos, and some Van Dycks for free. In Piazza dell’Accademia di San Luca, indeed, there is a precious art collection completely free. The Accademia di San Luca (formed by painters, miniaturists and artists) had its own statute which provided that each artist had to leave one work in memory of his art to the Academy. Princes and prominent figures had to do the same thing with their portraits. It has been forming thus around the ’600 a rich collection of works of art. A rare and unknown jewel you can find near Barberini subway station, not so far away from Via del Corso and Trevi Fountain.
Now you just need to book your b&b with bbitalia.it and enjoy this free museum!
